Dheepan is the latest film from French auteur Jacques Audiard (Rust and Bone). The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year where it won the Palme d’Or, the festival’s highest honour. The cast features Antonythasan Jesuthasan as Dheepan and Kalieaswari Srinivasan as Yalini.
To escape the civil war in Sri Lanka, a former soldier, a young woman and a little girl pose as a family. They end up settling in a housing project outside Paris. They barely know one another, but try to build a life together.
In an interview with The AV Club, Audiard was pretty vocal on his opinion of visual effects on film. “I’m not afraid of it, but it’s not cinema. It’s something different, it’s something else. In fact, six years ago, we had in France a festival for photojournalism. Photojournalism means reality. Pictures which are used to inform people. And the curator asked to have the original digital file to make sure it was not fake. You can create whatever you want with that. When Fellini was working, all the tools he used, all the images were real. When he showed a prostitute, it was the real thing. Even the craziest sets were manufactured, designed, and shot—it’s the real thing. Whereas today, you can create images where it’s not the real thing.”
Dheepan is rated 14A.
