Dallas Mavs defy odds, win #1 pick in 2025 NBA Draft

It was all smiles for the Dallas Mavericks at Monday night’s NBA draft lottery.

After a rough year, the team will have the first pick of new players.

The rough year the Mavericks are referring to? Where to start?

Fans were calling for the coach’s head after he traded star player Luka Doncic to the Lakers in February.

Things have only gone downhill since then.

The defensive player they traded him for, Anthony Davis, was out for most of the season after he was injured in the very first game he played with the Mavs, and star guard Kyrie Irving is expected to miss a good chunk of next season too as he recovers from a torn ACL.

That bad luck is looking up with just a 1.8 percent chance of winning the lottery, the Mavs now have first pick in the draft and the best chance of landing the number one draft pick, Cooper Flagg.

The 18-year-old said he wasn’t thinking too hard about which team he’d end up with.

“This entire experience for me has been amazing.  So going forward I’m just going to focus on being a two-way player, like you said.  That’s something I’ve done since I was a little kid and I’m going to keep doing that to the best of my ability” said Flagg.
