The families of Albunit Hiseni and Flamur Miftari say their world has been destroyed.
The 21-year old Hamilton men were killed in a car crash on Regional Road 20 in West Lincoln last week. They were weeks away from graduating from the police foundations course at Niagara College, and they both had dreams of becoming Hamilton Police officers.
Hiseni and Miftari were best friends. They did everything together. On Thursday both men were in Albunit’s car on their way to a police foundations class at Niagara College.
Albana Hiseni says her brother had dreams of being a police officer. “He said, ‘I’m going to protect society. I’m going to be a cop. But he never had the chance.”
Hiseni and Miftari were in a terrible crash while on their way to school. It happened when another car clipped a pickup and that pickup slammed into Hiseni’s red Honda. He died at the scene; Miftari on the way to hospital.
Skender Miftari is Flamur’s father: “He told me ‘father, you’re going to be one day so proud of me.'”
Miftari’s parents and his two sisters and brothers are heartbroken.
Flamur’s brother: “Lost for words. Can’t imagine this happened to us.”
Liridoni Miftari is Flamur’s sister: “He was always so kind to people. Not judgemental. He did not have one ounce of hate in his body.”
Hiseni and Miftari’s families came to Canada from Kosovo for a better life. Both men had four brothers and sisters.
Miftari loved Canadian hockey. He was a huge Leafs fan and had dreams of playing in the NHL.
Skender said: “We liked the game so much. We planned for the playoffs to go.”
This tragedy has devastated the young men’s friends.
Fitim Faci is a family friend: “My son’s birthday was March 14th. Says it was the worst gift for him.”
The families say both young men were disciplined. They never missed a day of school. They came to school the day of the big storm last week. They were on their way back the following day, the day they were killed even though they only had a one hour gym class.
Hiseni made plans to celebrate his birthday.
Albana said: “On Friday he was supposed to go to Montreal with friends to celebrate his birthday. Tomorrow he’s going to turn 21.”
But instead of a birthday celebration tomorrow, the families will be celebrating Hiseni and Miftari’s lives. They’ve planned a memorial service at Michelangelo’s banquet hall in Hamilton, followed by a funeral service at 12:30 at the family’s mosque.
