Craitor harassment allegations

The Liberal government is denying claims that a woman who accused former MPP Kim Craitor of workplace sexual harassment was paid to keep quiet. Last week, Premier Kathleen Wynne revealed that Craitor, who is currently a city councillor in Niagara Falls was asked to resign 3 years ago after the complaints were made and an independent investigation was ordered.
“She did receive severance and I hope no one is suggesting that she not ought to receive severance. Completely separate from any confidentiality agreement.” Deb Matthews, deputy Premier.
That’s not what city councillor Kim Craitor said last week. The former Liberal MPP says the 4 women who brought the complaints up had signed a non-disclosure agreement.
Craitor served as an MPP for a decade before suddenly resigning from his post in 2013. At the time of his resignation, Craitor said he was putting his health and family first.
“He tells a different story that his former employees told. There has to be caution. We have to be very careful. We will see if there is any repercussions, but it definitely has shine a light on him for sure.” Laurie Scott, Conservative MPP.
Michelle Tavano, a former assistant to Craitor was one of the four women working in his constituency office. Tavano did not want to talk on camera but told CHCH news she is thankful to the Premier for putting an end to it and says the fact Craitor denies what happened is insulting. In a report last week, Craitor said the allegations caught him off guard and called them unfounded. Craitor’s resignation came after the Liberal party hired an independent investigator to look into the matter.
Councillor Vince Kerrio says the allegations surrounding Craitor will be the elephant in the room at tomorrow’s council meeting.
“We have a small council and we get along very well together and the reason we get along together is the mutual trust and understanding between us.”
