Prime Minister Mark Carney told U.S. President Donald Trump in their first in-person meeting Tuesday that Canada will never be for sale.

Trump was questioned by reporters in the Oval Office about his previous “51st state” comments to which he responded with a lighter tone, but kept the door open for annexation.

“I think that there are tremendous benefits to the Canadian citizens, tremendously lower taxes, free military … It would really be a wonderful marriage,” said Trump.

Carney stood his ground and made a point to say that Canada will never be for sale, emphasizing that Canadians agree.

“Having met with the owners of Canada over the course of the campaign the last several months, it’s not for sale, won’t be for sale ever,” said Carney.

Carney added that the current opportunity is for the two nations to continue to work as partners and build together, as has been the case in the past.

Trump went on to say that regardless of what happens, Canada and the United States will maintain a friendly relationship.

The leaders stayed cordial throughout the meeting, with both exchanging compliments for each other.
