What a rollercoaster it has been. The goal of any Major League Baseball team is to make it to the World Series. The Toronto Blue Jays accomplished this goal but fell short of the championship title. Another accomplishment? Uniting a nation as Canada’s team.
We came so close.
Jays all-star pitching sensation Max Scherzer felt it too.
“Gutted. We all are. We are a team, so win or lose as a team. Everybody in here is gutted. Just disbelief,” said Scherzer.
Canada is right with you Scherzer.
“Sport is probably one of the only things in the world still that really can unite everybody around one common element,” said Olan Scott, sports management professor at Brock University.
The Blue Jays being the only Major League Baseball team north of the border united us as a country – according to Scott. He says Jays fans were a part of a shared community.
“People can kinda forget the tariffs and Trump and all of the other things that are going on in life and just kind of be captured by the Blue Jays for three or four hours,” said Scott.
Or a few months for those following the Jays journey all season. Some fans CHCH News spoke with took the loss personally.
“It’s not a good feeling at all for sure. You got the city together in this moment, it’s coming off 32 years and losing like this and having a lead in the 3rd inning? Obviously feels sad,” said one man.
Other fans were a little more optimistic about the Jays’ future.
“This was once in a lifetime. We feel bad that we lost but it took us 32 years to get back to the finals. So you know, this was a stepping stone. Last time we won two, this time we lost one. But next year there’s a new hope and we’re only gonna get better,” said another fan.
We’re going to need that as we move through this week without our boys in blue to cheer for.
