Alberta revising book ban after criticism over classics

The Alberta government has paused its order to remove books with sexually explicit content from school libraries after backlash over the removal of classics like The Handmaid’s Tale and 1984.
Advocates from the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) warn the government’s original order was overly broad and risked denying students access to important, thought-provoking literature.
Premier Danielle Smith says the province aims to keep classics on shelves while ensuring materials deemed pornographic are removed.
The CCLA’s response to Alberta’s book ban can be found on their website.
