Less than a week ago the CFL and its player’s union agreed to a new seven-year deal. Late last night, the members of the players union voted it down.
JC Abbott of 3Down Nation, a site dedicated to the CFL says the biggest issue blocking the league and its players from getting a deal done is the Canadian ratio.
Each team needs to have seven Canadian players starting on offense and defense. The league proposed making it eight, but that player could be an American who has either played in the league for five years or been on the same team for three.
The proposal also alters how Canadians are rotated throughout a game.
Ten-year CFL veteran Simoni Lawrence, who is an American, would be considered a naturalized Canadian player under the proposed deal.
Simoni tweeted last night upon hearing the deal had been rejected saying it’s all about the ratio.
Let’s be clear it’s all about the Ratio! They want us to go on strike together to hurt American players that choose to make there football team and community a priority which also creates same team continuity. So fans can feel safe getting there favorite players jersey 1/2

The Ti-Cats host a preseason game against the Montreal Alouettes this Saturday at Tim Horton’s Field.
TSN CFL reporter Dave Naylor reported that the league included a new $1-million ratification bonus to the players.
The players have until Thursday to sign the deal.
