Capital One target of massive data breach, 6M Canadians affected

A Seattle woman has been arrested after she allegedly gained access to personal information from more than 100 million Capital One credit applications, including six million from Canada.

The bank says it notified police as soon as it discovered the vulnerability in its system on July 19.

The hacker got information such as credit scores and balances, plus the Social Insurance Numbers of approximately one million Canadians were also compromised in the hack.

Paige A. Thompson – who also goes by the handle “erratic” – was charged with a single count of computer fraud and abuse in U.S District Court in Seattle, according to The Associated Press. She is being held in custody pending a detention hearing Thursday.

Capitol One provides Mastercard credit cards for Costco Wholesale’s Canadian retail network.

The bank says it will offer free credit monitoring and identity theft insurance to those affected.
