Canadian soccer star Alphonso Davies will not return to training after showing signs of a heart muscle issue following a bout with COVID-19.
The 21-year-old from Edmonton currently plays for FC Bayern Munich in Germany.
Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann told a pre-match news conference Friday that the problem was detected in the follow-up examination that all players who have had COVID undergo.
“He’ll sit out training until further notice. He won’t be available, also in the coming weeks. The ultrasound shows this myocarditis isn’t so dramatic but it’s a sign of myocarditis. Still, it has to heal and that will definitely take some time,” said Nagelsmann.
Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle. The inflammation can reduce the heart’s ability to pump and cause rapid or irregular heart rhythms.
Davies has won 35 caps for Canada with 10 goals and 15 assists.
His participation is now in doubt for Canada’s World Cup qualifiers later this month.
