It’s a sombre day in Ottawa as a service will be held at 11 am to mark the anniversary of the Parliament Hill attack that killed a Hamilton soldier standing on guard.
On October 22, 2014, Michael Zehaf Bibeau murdered Corporal Nathan Cirillo, who was guarding the National War Memorial. Bibeau was shot and killed in the Centre Block of Parliament a short time later.
Today’s service will honour both Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, who was run over and killed two days earlier by an extremist southeast of Montreal.
Last night (video above), about 100 members of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, the Hamilton reserve regiment that Cirillo belonged to, marched from Bayfront Park to the John Weir Foote Armoury.
This morning’s service in Ottawa will be very similar to a Remembrance Day ceremony. There’ll be a 21-gun salute and a fly-past featuring a missing man formation.
The service will be attended by — among others — Governor General David Johnston, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Prime Minister-designate Justin Trudeau as well as members of the Cirillo and Vincent families.
