Campaign calls for supporting restaurants as 10K closures reported across the country

First Published:

A restaurant industry group has a new campaign urging people to support their local restaurants in light of ongoing COVID-19 restrictions across the country.

Restaurants Canada says more than 10,000 eateries have shut down since March 2020.

Among the restaurants that have survived, half expect to shut down permanently if conditions don’t improve.

The campaign is calling on customers to support their local food and drink establishments this holiday season by buying gift cards, ordering takeout or delivery, and dining in where possible.

“The holiday season is usually one of the busiest times of the year for restaurants. This year, with so many under lockdown, it will be devastating,” said Todd Barclay, president and CEO of Restaurants Canada.

“We are asking consumers to take a stand and show their support for their local restaurants during this crucial time of the year.”
