Burlington townhouses evacuated after car hits gas line, driver charged

First Published:

A townhouse complex in Burlington has been evacuated after a vehicle hit a gas line overnight.

Police say a man was driving on Tobyn Dr., near Walkers Line and Upper Middle Rd., around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday when he lost control of the vehicle.

The 41-year-old drove up on the sidewalk, hit a tree and several vehicles parked in driveways. One of those vehicles was pushed forward into a townhouse and hit the gas line.

Several townhouses on Tobyn Dr. were evacuated and about 30 residents were forced to leave their homes.

Halton police and fire crews are on scene and the gas provider works to turn off the gas.

The street is closed between Kilmer Dr. and Forest Run Ave.

The driver was taken to hospital for injuries police say are not serious. He has been charged with impaired driving.
