Isn’t it ironic on the day that the greatest boxer of all time is put to rest, the NHL’s original ‘greatest of all time’ is gone. Hockey Hall of Famer Gordie Howe passed away this morning at the age of 88 and leaves behind one of the most spectacular resumes the sport has ever seen.

In 26 seasons in the National Hockey League, 25 of that of the Detroit Red Wings, Howe retired in 1980 as the leagues leader in goals with 801 and points with 1,850. After becoming bored during a short retirement, he took his talents to the rival World Hockey Association at the age of 45 and dominated recording 508 points in just 419 games.

Howe was named an NHL All Star 21-times. He played in 23 All Star games. He won the Art Ross Trophy six times and earned the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player six times. In addition, his Red Wing teams claimed the Stanley Cup four times and won the WHA’s Avco Cup twice with the Houston Aeros.

At 6-foot tall and 205 pounds, he was a monster in his era. On the ice, no one messed with Howe and if you did you got one of his famous elbows right in the chops. During his years in the WHA with the Houston Aeros from 1973 to 1979, he had the pleasure of playing with his two sons Mark and Marty. After his final retirement, those in the sport dubbed any player who had a goal, an assist and a fight in the same game with the honor of scoring a “Gordie Howe Hat Trick.”

If you asked Bobby Orr or Wayne Gretzky who the greatest hockey player of all time was, the answer would be unanimous. Perhaps the Hockey Hall of Fame said it best, “Gordie Howe is not only Mr. Hockey, he is hockey.”

Gordon Howe gone at 88 year old.
