A 37-year-old man is facing several charges in the alleged abduction of a two-year-old girl from Brantford.

Brantford police responded to a 911 call about a child abduction at a home on Bissett Ave. shortly after midnight Thursday.

Police say a man broke into a home through the back door and was confronted by the mother and another resident. They say the man threatened and assaulted the pair before grabbing the toddler and fleeing in a vehicle with three other people.

Police believed the group might have fled to a home in the Hamilton area and contacted Hamilton Police Service.

Shortly before 1 a.m., Hamilton officers checked the home but the child and her father were not there.

Police managed to make contact with the estranged father but he refused to disclose his location or return the child which prompted an Amber Alert.

Just before 3 a.m., police received a tip stating the father and child were at a home in the Central Mountain area.

After about an hour of communication, the two-year-old was handed over to police unharmed and the man was arrested.

Shawn McManus has been charged with abduction of person under sixteen, two counts of assault, utter threats to cause death or bodily harm, utter threats to destroy/damage property and break, enter and commit.

He is currently being held in custody for a bail hearing.
