There could be beer in some Ontario supermarkets soon, but wine sales may have to wait.
The Toronto Star says the province is expected to announce in next week’s budget that licenses to sell beer in 300 Ontario supermarkets will be auctioned off to chains.
Expanding wine sales could lead to challenges under NAFTA and the Canada-European Union trade agreement. Currently the American-owned Wine Rack and Canadian-owned Wine Shop occupy hundreds of outlets in supermarkets that sell Ontario and blended foreign bulk wine.
