BBQ sparks overnight fire at Hamilton Mountain home

First Published:

A family pet has died following an early morning house fire on Hamilton Mountain.

Emergency crews were called to a home on Upper Ottawa St. around 3 a.m. Monday. Firefighters found the rear of the home fully engulfed in flames.

Fire officials say the fire appears to have started on the back deck.

“It started on the barbeque, extended up to the roof, across the back of the house and into the garage,” said David Majpruz, Hamilton Fire Department.

The family was awoken by the smoke detectors and managed to get out safely. A cat was killed in the blaze and another is still missing.

Damage is estimated at $150,000.
