Seven people were arrested following a violent home invasion at an apartment building on Eastchester Ave in St Catharines.

They broke into an unit on the fifth floor early this morning. Niagara Regional Police say this was not a random occurrence, adding the unit was targeted by the people arrested.

While neighbours identify a resident of the top floor as a drug dealer, police say they are still investigating the motives. Niagara Regional Police brought CHCH News inside the unit where there was broken glass and blood on the floor.

When police arrived shots were fired from the balcony. Police did not fire back but they did recover a gun at the scene. The tactical team went door to door looking for the suspects, who they were found in another apartment building. After an aggressive encounter they were taken into custody.

One woman told CHCH News her son had a close encounter with one of the armed officers. “Police had a gun in his face and said ‘show me your hands’, and he did, and they said ‘just get back inside’ and my son asked him ‘is it safe?’ He said ‘just get back inside and close the window,’ and so he was terrified for hours.”

“What my son did tell me is that outside our apartment door, he heard ‘freeze, drop it, get down on the ground, on your belly, hands up,’ and so we’re not sure what transpired there but there was an incident of some sort.”

Forensic investigators have been to Eastchester Ave, collecting evidence and taking pictures. Around 10 this morning detectives from the criminal investigation branch arrived and were interviewing witnesses.

Four of the seven arrested remain in custody.
