Today marked the 124th year for the Around the Bay race and some runners had to overcome big obstacles to be able to participate.
It is the oldest race in North America and one that draws thousands to the city every year to test their fortitude.
York Boulevard turned into a sea of people of all ages and skill levels to race against the clock. Finishers arrived inside First Ontario Centre to cross the finish line.
Ross Proudfoot was the winner of the 5k race. It took him just over 14 minutes, and the first female, Gladys Tarus came in under 18 minutes. Both are from the Greater Toronto Area.
While not everyone made record times, it was a special moment because for some.
At an hour and thirty-five minutes, the first man to cross the finish line in the 30 kilometer race comes from Toronto. He says it wasn’t easy.
The first woman to cross the finish line after 30 kilometers has won four times. From Vancouver, she says despite not feeling great, she’s grateful for the win.
This year’s fundraising goal was $625,000 all going back to St. Joseph’s Healthcare.
