If you’re on the highways it’s not unusual to see a big rig carrying new cars from one location to the other, but for the second time this year, one of those car carriers caught fire in Fort Erie.

The fire started in the engine compartment of this sterling car carrier and spread rapidly.

Flames and thick black smoke were shooting into the air, car horns were blaring, tires blowing and within seconds three brand new Ford Escapes were consumed by flames.

And now they are just charred shells. The other cars have extensive smoke damage.

The driver had picked up the new vehicles at the Oakville assembly plant and was taking them to Buffalo.

He was just metres away from The Flying J truck stop in Fort Erie when he could smell smoke.

Fort Erie Fire Chief Larry Coplen noticed the smoke and flames as he was on his way to
get some gas. He raced over and called 911.

In January another sterling car carrier burst into flames while parked at the truck stop. The Lexus and Infinity cars on the truck were destroyed.

In November 2013 the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office put out a warning to fire departments after the engines on a number of Sterling winter maintenance trucks caught fire while parked in the garage overnight.
