A dog and cat were found dead, while almost 40 other animals were rescued, following an anonymous tip to the Milton Humane Society. The animals were left out in the extreme cold with no shelter, and water bowls that were completely frozen.

The dogs, mostly beagles were found on a rural property near Trafalgar Road and the 401. One of the dogs was pregnant and gave birth to seven puppies shortly after being rescued . The animals were left out in the cold on a day when the temperature was below minus 20 with the windchill.

An anonymous tip led investigators to the property. “As it was such a cold day we needed to ensure the outdoor provisions for those dogs was adequate, when we investigated we determined they were not edequate as per the OSPCA act” explains
OSPCA Investigator Laura MacKasey. While it is not illegal to leave dogs out in the cold 24/7, you have to ensure they have food, water and shelter. “Provisions include a well structured, insulated dog house that allows the dog to move around, stretch out at the full extent of it’s limbs and it also has to be elevated with a wind flap.”

10 rabbits were also recovered. A dog and a cat were found dead. The Humane Society was already at capacity before the animals were brought in, now it’s overflowing. It is a registered charity and doesn’t receive any funding from the government. Donations were pouring in today as people heard about the animals. Officials say a number of people also asked about adoption.

The investigation is continuing, no charges have been laid at this time.

Officials say if you see an animal you think is in distress, don’t hesitate to call. Even if your not sure, they will investigate.
