An Andy Warhol exhibition usually means guests will see a collection of the pop artist’s famous work, but a new exhibition opening at the TIFF Bell Lightbox is just as much about Warhol’s own personal collection.
Andy Warhol was obsessed with celebrity. He was as much of a consumer of pop culture as he was a connoisseur, and it’s his lifelong fascination with fame that’s the focus of the new exhibition called, “andy Warhol:Stars of the Silver Screen.”
From movie star publicity photos, to headshots and magazines, the exhibition displays items the artist saved over the years and displays them next to some of works they inspired. This collection gives visitors a deeper look into his life.
During the height of his success, he welcomes people from all walks of life into his studio and TIFF recreated the space.
Warhol was a prolific filmmaker. In addition to his movies, he made nearly 500 black and white “screen tests” of friends, artists and celebrities.
Guests can experience what it was like to pose for one of his moving portraits by staring into a digitally converted 16 millimetre camera for three minutes. And then they can take home their own 15 minutes of fame.
The exhibition runs October 30th to January 24th.
