What is Good Friday?

First Published:

Good Friday, for many people, it’s a day off from work or school, but for more than 20 million Canadians it’s much more.

Good Friday is a Christian holiday, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Every Friday before Easter Sunday, some catholics walk the stations of the cross.

“As Christians, Catholics specifically, it’s part of our identity to celebrate and commemorate the death of our savior.” says St. Thomas More Chaplain Maciej Blok

A ceremony at Bishop Tonnos Park on Hamilton Mountain, lasted less than an hour in the pouring rain.

17 year old Jovan Lewis carried the cross today. He says people his age aren’t as interested in religion anymore. He says, “I don’t think the young people do this as much as they should, they should be out here with us despite the weather.”

Catholics don’t eat meat on Good Friday, Ash Wednesday, and the Fridays during lent as a form of penance in honor of Christ’s sacrifice.

But eating fish is allowed which is why Connaught Fish and Chips is so packed.

“It’s like doing better than a weeks worth of business in four hours.” says Micheal Veenstra

Veenstra doesn’t keep track of all the customers, but expects hundreds of people to walk through the doors on Good Friday. He says it’s become more of a tradition, than a religion.
