An 85-year-old woman is dead after being struck by a minivan on Highway 8, east of Green Road in Stoney Creek, Friday night.

The woman was walking with a 12-year-old girl who was also hit.

The girl suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

It happened just after 6 p.m. Friday evening.

The woman and the girl were crossing the highway when they were hit by a  minivan that was travelling west.

Police said the woman and girl were not crossing at a light or an intersection.

The 85-year-old woman was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Highway 8 was closed from King Street East to Green Road for several hours while the Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the crash.

Police will not release the woman’s name until next of kin has been notified and it is not clear if charges will be made.

The investigation continues.

This is the city’s 14th traffic fatality this year involving a pedestrian.
