Hamilton police say four people have been arrested in connection with a blockade that was set up on a local railway earlier this week.
A group of roughly 30 protestors gathered on the tracks near the Bayview Junction in Hamilton around 5 p.m. Monday.
The group set up the barricade in solidarity with the Wet’Suwet’en First Nation who oppose the construction of the $6-billion pipeline through Wet’Suwet’en territory in British Columbia.
Police say officers saw two fires on the railway lines and the tracks were covered with ropes and signage.
The protesters were served an injunction by CN Rail to leave the site and eventually cleared the area around 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The blockade resulted in the cancellation of Metrolinx services at the West Harbour GO, Hamilton GO, St. Catharines GO, Niagara Falls GO stations, and affected CN and CP rail service.
Officers arrested three people Wednesday night and a fourth person turned herself in to police Thursday morning.
Police have charged Barry Conway, 34, Woodrow Fraser-Boychuk, 25, Patricia Mills, 35 and Erin Warner, 38, with two counts each of mischief – damage to property, and mischief – interfere with lawful use of a property.
Hamilton police say they are continuing to investigate the rail service disruption and anticipate more charges will be laid.
