$3M in illegal cannabis, 35 guns seized from 6 Hamilton Mountain properties

First Published:

Hamilton police say 16 people are facing numerous charges following a three-month-long intelligence-led investigation into drug trafficking and gun violence in the city.

Police launched Project Munro earlier this year to pursue those who are engaged in violence, drug activity and firearms in Hamilton.

As a result of the investigation, officers seized more than $3 million in drugs, roughly $175,000 in cash, 35 firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition from six properties on Hamilton Mountain.

“Nearly 35 per cent of the firearms seized were found either loaded or unsafely stored. Several firearms had also been modified in order to enhance performance,” said police in a news release. “Three heavily plated high-calibre bullet proof vests were also seized.”

In total, 24 search warrants were executed and 213 charges were laid.

Hamilton police say despite cannabis products being legal, illicit grow operations remain a valid concern as they pose safety risks to the community.

They say modifications like tampering with electrical wiring, installing irrigation devices, industrial exhaust fans, and bypassing utility meters can result in fires or explosions.

“Hamilton Police continue to conduct investigations with a collective goal of enhancing public safety within Hamilton,” said police. “The negative impact of criminal networks and their activities know no borders and impact the safety of everyone in our community.”

The investigation remains ongoing and police say they will not be releasing any further details.

Anyone with information about gun violence is asked to contact Hamilton police at 905-546-4925.
