The Provincial election is now one year away and the main political party leaders are weighing in on what lies ahead, for some of them the campaign has already begun. But even with a year to go and campaign platforms in their infancy one political science expert thinks some voters may have already made up their minds.
Henry Jacek, a political science expert at McMaster University says the election is still a long way out but if voters were to head to the polls today, Patrick Brown and the Progressive Conservatives would likely come out on top.
“They’ve been running ahead for over a year and the question is, will they be able to keep that up for another year.”
Andrea Horwath happens to be the most popular leader of the three main parties, but the New Democrats are seen as a wild card.
At this moment the Liberals are rolling out a number of announcements from pharmacare to transit projects and while Jacek applauds the Liberals minimum wage hike as a brilliant strategy, he says one of the party’s biggest challenges for voters will be the Premier herself.
“The polls have said they want a new leader, they don’t want Kathleen Wynne as the leader again.”
And a big question remains, do voters have a short term memory, will soaring hydro rates be an issue of the past by the time voters head to the polls? While Patrick Brown continues to bring it up to keep it in the forefront, Wynne has a number of announcements in the coming months, new strategies to keep the focus on the Liberal plans for the future.
