A 14-year-old Etobicoke has died after she was shot Thursday morning. The northwest Toronto neighbourhood is in shock, trying to piece together exactly what happened to the teenager. Friends and neighbours have identified the girl as Lecent Ross.
Officers were called to a unit in a public housing complex in Rexdale just after 10:30 Thursday morning. When they arrived, they found the teen unconscious and not breathing. She was pronounced dead at 1130 later that morning. Police say she was shot by an illegal semi-automatic handgun. The incident is being considered a suspicious death. Police have not said whether Ross fired the gun herself, or if it was fired intentionally. Neighbours who knew her, say she was a good girl and was not the type to be playing with guns.
Ross did not live in the unit where officers found her, police say there was one adult present in the residence, along with other young people. No charges have been laid at this point and the police are still investigating.
