A car plowed through more than 30 people on the Las Vegas strip and at least five Canadians were among those injured. One of them is in critical condition.

The scene was recorded by a Las Vegas tower camera and showed a sea of flashing lights from emergency vehicles. One person was killed.

Police say 37 people were taken to hospital and six are in critical condition. Four were treated and released.

It happened around 9pm eastern time, about 6 pm Vegas time.

The woman driving left the scene, but was later arrested and was being tested for alcohol and controlled substances. She had a three-year-old child in the car at the time of the crash. Police say they are treating this as a deliberate act.

So what we have at this point is, we have a black female in her 20’s with a child in the car, three years old. She was driving a 1996 Oldsmobile 4-door vehicle with Oregon plates. She went up off the street onto the sidewalk two or possibly three times. And based on the evidence and information from our fatal investigators, at this point we are treating this as an intentional act. She is the detention center right now. She is speaking to detectives. They are drawing her blood and she will be, I expect her to be charged within the next few hours.” said Lieutenant Dan McGrath.

The Vegas strip is one of the busiest tourist areas in the world with an estimated 17 000 people walking on the strip at any given hour on any given day, and as many as 35 000 between 6 pm and midnight when this crash happened.

A lot of people from our area travel to Vegas this time of year. There are 18 flights to the city departing from Pearson International today and tomorrow alone.
