Syrian refugees in Hamilton

While Canada prepares to welcome tens of thousands of Syrian refugees in the next couple of months, some refugees from the war-torn country have already settled in Hamilton for over a year.

One family we spoke to today came to Canada from Syria via Jordan just over a year ago. They were able to flee Syria after living just a year and a half into the Civil War. Luckily the government of Canada sponsored them and brought them to Hamilton where they were greeted by Wesley Urban Ministries.

Mohammed and his wife have three young boys and they’ve been attending Hess Street School since the day they got here. He and his wife have been very touched by the amount of help Canadians have offered since they got here. They said that whenever an ounce of difficulty comes up in everyday life someone has always come to their aid. Their kids are especially appreciative to be living here.

Mohammed said that he’s in constant contact with family and friends back in Syria for about 3-5 hours a day and is urging them to get to Canada somehow. In the meantime, he’s going to continue to work on his English and hopes to get his G license so he can get back to work as a truck driver, something he did back home for about 13 years.
