A shock for shoppers at a plaza in Hamilton’s east end.

Just after two this afternoon a red Corolla lost control and crashed into a poll in front of the Bulk Barn on Queenston Road.

Police don’t know if the driver, a woman in her 80’s , suffered a medical distress or simply accelerated, losing control of the vehicle.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A man, believed to be in his 60’s, was also injured. He was outside the store when the woman crashed her car.

The stone from the post fell onto him injuring his leg. He was taken to Hamilton General Hospital but is expected to be ok. No one else was injured in the crash.

As of Thursday evening Police had still not yet released the name of the woman and won’t until family has been notified.

The damaged store will remain closed until engineers deem it structurally sound.
