Some exciting news for wine drinkers in Ontario. According to a report by the Toronto Star, the province is uncorking its distribution rules, meaning you can expect to see wine in 70 supermarkets real soon.

While the Ontario government is being tight-lipped on details, wine growers say they are ecstatic about the news. .The Wine Council of Ontario has been long advocating for greater competition in the wine retail sector.

In a written statement the Wineries Association says – “The approach is a win for consumers and will unlock the Ontario VQA wine industry’s true growth potential.”

The Ontario government has been mum on the topic, only saying “they will have more to say later this month.”

On top of the 35 Ontario only grocery stores, an additional 35 licenses will be handed to winning bidders to sell both foreign and domestic wines. After a three-year span all licensed outlets would be allowed to sell both and by that time the province plans to increase wine sales to 150 supermarkets. Standalone shops like Wine Rack which are in some grocery stores will be moved onto store shelves
