Every day in the province, cancer patients rely on volunteers to get to treatment appointments.
Simcoe’s Darlene Smith had a lumpectomy to remove breast cancer and now she needs radiation treatments 5 days a week at the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton. That’s where retired trucker Ruth Dinsmore and other volunteer drivers with the Canadian Cancer Society come in.
The program is called Wheel’s of Hope and Ruth shuttles cancer patients like Darlene to and from appointments, four days a week.
There are roughly 2300 volunteers across the province, making nearly 70 000 trips for total strangers.
Ruth is compensated by the Cancer Society for her gas and the wear and tear on her vehicle but she more than happy to donate her time.
