The city of Hamilton has been working on re-developing its West Harbour for more than a decade and now plans are moving forward to break ground on nine blocks of multi-unit housing on Pier 8.
In the past two years the city has built a boardwalk on Pier 7 with transient docks, it’s also fixing the shoreline. The Police Marine Unit is one of the oldest buildings on the waterfront and it will be moved and rebuilt and the Port Authority sheds will be re-purposed. It’s described in the plan as an artisan village. The city recently put in new breakwaters to prepare for more boats. Starting in October they are putting all the docks and slips in the main basin. The city will replace the 400 slips that are currently there with an expansion to 640 slips.
Right now you can walk from Bayfront Park through to Pier 4, Pier 7 and all the way to the Haida. But in the city’s vision, that walk would be a lot less difficult to navigate. All Piers will be connected. The Haida would be the east of the development. The city wants to put a nine-block community with a walkway to the waterfront that’s wider and greener. The buildings are to be 8 storeys high or smaller, a total of up to 1,600 units.
The plan will take some time, anywhere from 10 to 15 years. The city says it will be looking for developers for a mix of buildings and that they are still talking to residents about the plans.
If you want to learn about and contribute to how prospective partners and their proposals will be evaluated and selected there will be a workshop taking place on September 8th at the Good Shepherd Bishop Tonnos Apartments Community Room (10 Pearl St) from 6:30-8:30pm.
