The city of Hamilton has big plans for the West Harbour, plans that include up to 1600 housing units and retail space for businesses at the city’s waterfront.
Construction is already underway on a new boardwalk at Pier 8, right across from the Williams Fresh café and that’s just a small part of what the city is planning for the West Harbour.
“Over the next 2 years you’ll see significant changes down here, new sewers, new water, new roads, sidewalks, public spaces.” Chris Phillips, City of Hamilton.
The plan is to have the majority of development be for public use, like a large park that will act as a gateway to the waterfront. The total cost of the West Harbour project is about $130 million. City council has already committed $60 million to get the lands ready for development.
“We’re probably talking about 13,000 square metres of commercial space, and we’re talking about cafe’s shops and restaurants that people would expect at waterfronts around the world.”
City council will vote on the plans on May 27th, if they’re approved, major construction is expected to start in 2018.
