When you think of summer camp you likely think of sports camp or overnight camps involving art or outdoor activities but the Canadian Welding Association has a different take on the summer camp experience. It says there will soon be a shortage of welders in Canada, so they’re targeting kids early to spark some interest.
The camp is at the Canadian Welders Association building in Milton. It’s designed to help kids and young adults who’ve been in trouble with the law or struggling to stay in school. CWA partnered with Liberty for Youth and most of the kids here are from Hamilton or Burlington.
The average age of a welder in Canada right now is 60 years old which means many of them will be retiring soon. That’s why the CWA foundation says it’s important to attract kids to welding. “Career opportunities such as being a welding supervisor, being a welding inspector, teaching welding, there’s pipeline, shipbuilding, all kinds of projects where welders are needed.”
The plan is to expand the camps to communities all across Canada to help shine the light for welders of the future.
