Weiner gives in, resigns

First Published:

The Anthony Weiner soap opera appears to have ended.

It looks like the pressure was too much, so Thursday the congressman who is caught up in an online sex scandal announced that he is resigning. The Democratic Representative announced his decision in his home district of Brooklyn, New York.

It comes amid two weeks of intense controversy surrounding explicit messages and photos he sent to women on-line. During his announcement, Weiner again apologized for the “embarrassment” he caused. Noticeably absent was his pregnant wife, Huma Abedin.

“I am here today to again apologize for the personal makes I have made and the embarrassment that I have caused. I make this apology to my neighbors and my constituents, but I make it particularly to my wife, Huma.”

“I had hoped to be able to continue the work that the citizens of my district elected me to do: to fight for the middle class and those struggling to make it. Unfortunately the distract that I have created has made that impossible. So today, I am announcing my resignation from Congress.”

Pressure to resign came from President Barack Obama himself, and included both Democrats and Republicans.

And Wednesday, exotic dancer and former porn star Ginger Lee held a news conference. She claims Weiner told her to lie to cover up their internet messaging.
