Revitalizing the West Harbour waterfront

The West Harbour Waterfront will start to look a lot different in the next few years. The city has long been planning to redevelop the land and we’ve already seen some progress at Peir 8. The city hopes the transformation of the area will not only make Hamilton a better place to live and visit but also solve one the its biggest issues: the lack of affordable housing and the growing need for it.

The West Harbour Development Sub-Committee was presented with a report Tuesday outlining an affordable housing and transition strategy. They learned that the municipally owned land they want to develop is worth upwards of $40 Million. The report outlines two paths the city could take. They can either tell developers that there’s a requirement to build affordable housing on the lands, or they could flat out sell the land and use the money to fix the housing issue.

The city plans on having the lands development-ready by 2018.
