Waterloo tech biz expects to weather RIM storm

First Published:

It’s been one of the largest, strongest and most stable tech companies in the world, for more than a decade.

So it seemed surprising when Research In Motion announced 200 layoffs this week, and share prices tumbled nearly $10. Nowhere would the news seem to be more disturbing, than in RIM’s home turf of Kitchener-Waterloo. But as Scot Urquhart tells us, there doesn’t seem to be much panic in the centre of Canada’s tech triangle:

It may take a few years, or just a few months, but the analysts and experts seem to believe that the current challenges to RIM will be overcome. They say the tech business is cyclical, and RIM will rebound. And they believe the company is so financially sound, that no one will need to hold a tag sale for RIM any time soon.
