On Saturday, hockey players hit the ice to pay tribute to a local victim of depression.
Tyler Howard took his own life about a year and a half ago at the age of 31.
He spent of his life playing rep hockey, so now his family and friends and keeping his memory alive with “Ty’s Tourney”. The tournament is in its second year and is meant to help raise awareness and money for mental health.
“We want to make sure everybody talks about this stuff. Depression is a terrible thing, it’s a very personal thing. The more we talk about it, the easier it is for it to come out. I think if it helps one, two, or three, then it’s a good thing,” says Tyler’s father Greg Howard.
Last year about $16,000 was raised for the Canadian Mental Health Association, and this year’s total is expected to be even higher.
