Now to more on how this all happened and who was behind the wheel of that truck. We now know the driver has been identified as 34-year-old Sukhvinder Rai of Brampton.
At this point, it’s unclear if Rai was an employee of the trucking company, or just someone hired to move the cargo bin belonging to the company.
The OPP says that at the time of the incident, Rai was driving a dump truck without any content in the back. The bin on the truck allegedly belongs to “Triple-M-Metal”, a company that deals with scrap metal recycling. It has locations across Canada, including here in Hamilton and Brampton. Triple M Metal refused to comment on camera, saying that this is a matter that’s currently being investigated. Rai is charged with one count of impaired operation of a motor vehicle and one count of having a blood alcohol level exceeding 80 milligrams while operating a motor vehicle. As a result of these charges, his licence has been suspended for 90 days.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt: “It’s very disappointing and concerning for us. Impaired driving is one of the key priorities we have to keep our highways safe and one of the leading causes of injury and death. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt in this incident, but we take any impaired driving charges very seriously. And obviously the consequences here, not only on the driver, but the consequences on everybody else that’s stuck in this traffic, it’s very unfortunate.”
Rai has since been released from custody and is due to appear in a Hamilton court on August 22nd.
