The deadline for a bid on the 2024 Summer Olympics Games is fast approaching. There appears to be interest in another bid from the city of Toronto, and while Toronto’s Mayor John Tory says he has reached out to the Prime Minister and Premier about the subject, mayors from other local municipalities in the GTHA say they have yet to be approached.
Hamilton, Milton and Welland are just some of the municipalities that helped Toronto host the 2015 Pan Am games. The new Tim Horton’s Field hosted Pan Am soccer, but Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger has yet to hear from the city of Toronto about the 2024 Olympic bid. Milton’s Velodrome was specifically built for the Pan Am games and Mayor Gordon Krantz also has not heard from Toronto about the Olympics. Krantz says he would entertain the town involvement in a bid, but a lot of thought would have to go into how they would participate.
The International Olympic Committee says the applicant city phase for 2024 starts on September 15th, with a deadline to submit files of January 8th next year. Los Angeles, which would be Toronto’s North American competition, has unanimously voted to put in a bid.
Analysts have estimated if Toronto does vote to go ahead, the bid alone would cost $50-60 million. If Toronto ends up getting the 2024 games, experts say it costs could vary, but it would be in the billions of dollars. The Los Angeles bid plans for $6 billion in public and private spending.
