Firefighters were called to a remote area near Lakeview Cemetery in Thorold Sunday afternoon after reports a man had fallen into a nine metre hole.

Firefighters say 47-year-old Dan O’Hara was walking in an area of an old seaway wall with his family when he fell into the hole.

The incident happened just after 12 pm. The man was conscious, but complained about a knee injury.

Firefighters say the hole was so deep they were not actually able to see him.

St. Catharine’s high-angle rescue team was called in.

The man was freed just after 3 pm. He was treated by paramedics on scene and was able to leave on his own.

Fire officials say one of the biggest challenges in this rescue was the terrain.

A firefighter was also taken to hospital with a minor knee injury.

O’Hara has been charged with trespassing.
