The Hero

The Hero is a drama directed and co-written by Brett Haley (I’ll See You in My Dreams). The film premiered at Sundance this year and reunites Haley with veteran actor Sam Elliott, who had a part in I’ll See You in My Dreams. Co-starring in the film are Laura Prepon, Krysten Ritter, Nick Offerman, and Katharine Ross.

Lee Hayden (Elliott) is a Western icon with a golden voice, but his best performances are decades behind him. He spends his days reliving old glories and smoking too much weed with his former-co-star-turned-dealer, Jeremy (Offerman), until a surprise cancer diagnosis brings his priorities into sharp focus. He soon strikes up an exciting, contentious relationship with stand-up comic Charlotte (Prepon), and he attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Lucy (Ritter), all while searching for one final role to cement his legacy. THE HERO is a beautiful and poignant celebration of life and the legacies we all leave behind.

“Even though there is this immense love for Sam, he hasn’t had the same opportunities to be a “leading man” as other actors from his generation,” Haley says. “He told me “for a while there I could only get work if I was on a horse or a motorcycle.” Sam was so much more to me than a man on a horse. I told him, “I’ve been talking with my writing partner Marc and we’re going to write a movie for you.” “Bullshit,” he replied. But it wasn’t bullshit and my goal was simple: 90 minutes of Sam Elliott. That is how THE HERO and the character of Lee Hayden came about.”

The Hero is rated 14A.
