So far the shooting hasn’t been connected to ISIS. But that’s being investigated in Canada and in Washington, D.C. Officials here are also looking into whether today’s shootings are connected to the deadly hit and run in Quebec on Monday.
At this point there has been no indication by any authorities that these two incidents are connected.
On Monday, two Canadian soldiers were run over in Quebec. One of them, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent was killed. Police say the man responsible had Jihadist sympathies. The Mounties says they had begun to investigate the suspected Islamic militant Martin Couture-Rouleau for at least four months. They say they had evidence through Facebook he was radicalizing. Couture-Rouleau was shot dead by police.
Just prior to that incident, Canada’s terror threat level had been raised from low to medium. Officials insisted it had nothing to do with a specific threat. Today, the RCMP explained further.
RCMP Superintendent Doug Best: “The elevation, the threat level had been elevated based on circumstances consistent with our allies abroad I’m sure and with events that had been unfolding globally I’m sure it was tied in as well with our participation with the in the efforts abroad and that would help formulate the threat level.”
The attack in Quebec happened the same day Canadian fighters jets were sent to battle Islamic extremists overseas. There has been absolutely no connection made at this point with the tragedy in Ottawa today.
