It’s been just over a week since the arrival of Hamilton’s first government-sponsored Syrian refugees.

Sean Leathong had the pleasure of speaking to a man named Mounther Alahamad, a 40 years old husband and father of two who is starting over in Canada. He is quickly getting to know the city, and that everywhere he goes, he receives the same greeting, “Welcome to Canada. Everywhere, welcome to Canada.”

He and his children arrived at Wesley Urban Ministries on December 21st. Upon arrival he knew that his son Hamza age 1, and daughter Limar, who is two and a half are safe. Now he can start from scratch and build up.

Mounther is just one of the original 17 refugees who arrived last week. Since that time, Wesley Urban Ministires has received over 65 more bringing their total above 80 and with three more flights coming to Canada today, they expect that number to go well above a 100 in the near future.
