It’s a parent’s nightmare. something you think, will never happen in broad daylight, at a busy location.
But for a woman in Malton, near the Pearson airport, it was all too real this morning.
In a flash, her car, and her nine-month old baby boy were gone.
As a parent you think, I’d never do anything like that. But it happens far more often, and far more easily than you may believe.
The woman in the back of this car is not a criminal, but she may have made a mistake:
Peel Regional Police Media Relations Officer Lilly Fitzpatrick: “It’s never a good idea to leave.”
She just ducked into the Shell station to pay for gas. A quick stop, on a cold day. Car running. Heater on — for the baby in the back seat — just outside the door.
The building superintendent apparently noticed the car and its precious cargo almost immediately. Baby is safe and well. Mother, less so.
Police towed the recovered car to a lab for investigation:
But so far, they don’t have much to go on.
And although he took the baby in the car, a charge of kidnapping is probably not likely.
Police have not released the name of the woman involved. The car had Quebec licence plates, but it’s believed she lived in or around Mississauga.
The gas station security tape has not been released. But with a crime like this, it can be very difficult to solve.
