We all know that exercise is good for our health, but St. Joseph’s hospital is taking it a step further.
Patients who are scheduled for lung cancer surgery are given a Fitbit, which works like a pedometer, to track their activity level. Besides tracking how much a person walks, it also monitors sleep patterns, smoking habits, heart rate, and how much you’re sitting throughout the day.
Doctor Wael Hanna at St. Josephs hospital thinks one of these could be the key to an easier recovery from lung surgery.
“Surgery is like undergoing any big physical feat. The more your body is trained, the better you can go through it.”
It’s not a new concept, to prepare for surgery patients have always had to exercise but before they had to come to the hospital so that doctors could track their activity. Now these activity bracelets track every movement and doctors have access to all the data.
