With the heat we’ve been having many people have been heading down to the water to cool off or just basking in the sun on the beach but spending the entire day outside can be damaging to your skin especially on a day like today when the UV index is at a 9, which is considered very high. We should all know by now that we’re supposed to protect our skin from from the sun.

“Burns are one of the most important risks for skin cancer. So you need to think ahead and bring sunscreen with you.” Dr. Judy Wismer.

There are many types of sunscreen on the market, they have different ingredients and different levels of SPF. They’re not all created equal.

“You have to look for one that’s CDA dermatologist approved.”

That means it’s up to standard and you should also always look for “broad spectrum coverage” on the sunscreen bottle. That means it protects from UVB and UVA rays.

Dr. Judy Wismer says you should also put it on 20 minutes before heading out into the sun and reapply it throughout the day especially if you’re in the water, even if your sunscreen is waterproof.
