Summer trauma

Another heat warning and a caution for all of those people looking to cool off outdoors.

It’s not a surprise to find many people seeking the splash of water at one of Hamilton’s many waterfalls and lots of people have been hiking the local trails which, along with the heat, has been keeping emergency crews busy. In the last month three people have fallen while exploring local waterfalls, and trauma doctors at the Hamilton General hospital say it’s a trend that is on the rise this summer. And not only are they seeing a rise in hiking accidents but they’re seeing more victims of bike and motorcycle crashes as well.

“We need to be more cautious about how we bike observing rules of road, use motorcycles and understand they’re poor visibility vehicles, and drivers need to be more aware.”

While the beautiful weather has encouraged people to get out, it’s also causing heat related issues.

“Throughout the city there’s been an increase in heat related illnesses. People are taking part in energetic activities and not appropriately rehydrating and taking sun precautions.”

If you feel dizzy, confused, have a headache or are sweating a lot you should seek shade and air conditioning right away.
